Four Tips for Choosing the Right Sofa Size and Material
The sofa plays a vital role in the living room, occupying a significant amount of space. Whether for resting or watching TV, the whole family uses the sofa. Therefore, a lot of thought must go into measuring the dimensions; placing a large sofa in a small living room will only make the space feel even more cramped. Today, I will talk about sofa dimensions and tell you how to choose the right material.
There are many types of sofas on the market, including single-seaters, two-seaters, three-seaters, L-shaped sofas, and sofa beds. Since living rooms in Hong Kong are generally not large, a two- or three-seater sofa is usually sufficient. Of course, if your living room is larger, it is more suitable to place an L-shaped sofa or a sofa bed.
After hearing about so many styles, the question arises: which one should you choose? If you want an L-shaped sofa at home, will it actually fit?
Selection Tip 1: Measure the Wall Width
First, you need to decide on the positions of the TV and the sofa at home, ensuring there is an appropriate distance between them. We can start by measuring the length of the wall the sofa will lean against to calculate how large a sofa we should buy. If you want to buy an L-shaped sofa or a sofa bed, you also need to check the maximum depth of the sofa. To make the space look less crowded, the sofa can follow a ratio of approximately 3/4 the width of the main wall. For example, if the wall length is 400cm, a suitable sofa length would be 300cm. A small side table can be placed next to it for items like a phone or a desk lamp.
Selection Tip 2: Maintain Proper Distance Between the Sofa and the TV
Generally, the sofa should face the TV directly and lean against the wall, with a distance of 1.5 to 2.5 meters between the sofa and the TV. However, as TV sizes get larger these days, if you have a 50-inch large TV at home, the distance should be 3 to 4 meters to avoid straining your eyes.
Selection Tip 3: The Most Comfortable Dimensions for Sitting
The seat height of a sofa should be between 35cm and 42cm, which is roughly the height of a person’s lower leg. Dimensions that are too high or too low make it difficult for our muscles to relax, and long-term use can easily cause body aches. The seat depth should be between 48cm and 55cm so that when your back is against the sofa, your feet do not leave the ground. An armrest height of 62cm to 65cm is the most comfortable. Since family members vary in height, it is best for the whole family to go and try sitting on the sofa in person to see if it is a good fit.
Selection Tip 4: Pros and Cons of Sofa Materials
Sofa materials are usually divided into genuine leather, faux leather, and fabric, each with its own pros and cons.
Genuine leather feels noble and elegant, has good breathability, a comfortable touch, and is relatively easy to clean. With proper maintenance, it is very durable, but the price is relatively high. Faux leather is cheaper than genuine leather and is also easy to clean, but the texture is not as good. Fabric has high breathability, a soft texture, and a lower price, but it is more prone to stains, difficult to clean, and has lower durability.
In addition to looking at the pros and cons of the materials themselves, you also need to consider the interior design style. For example, Nordic and Muji styles are more suited to fabric sofas.
